With an estimated budget of €429 million, The Count of Monte Cristo is the most expensive French film of 2024
After escaping from an island prison where he spent 14 years wrongly accused of treason, Edmond Dantès returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to seek revenge on the men who betrayed him. When Albert watches Hydee sing and play guitar, it’s very obvious that he’s not even touching the strings half the time.
He appears in La grande semaine: Episode #113 (2024)
It’s always tricky to approach something as complex as this novel and try to make a coherent film that includes all the plots, subplots, and subplots, not to mention accurate character accounting. I enjoyed the Richard Chamberlain TV movie, and the 2002 film, despite some wholesale plot fragmentation in both.
Even the 1998 6 hour 23 minute miniseries couldn’t do the full story, and it was my definitive adaptation of the last 25 years
The point is, in order to fit it into 3 hours, it was clear that they wanted to trim certain plot lines, change characters, and simplify the narrative. The question then becomes whether they did this in a way that would allow those who aren’t already familiar with the story, those who may have read the book three or four times, and everyone in between to enjoy it.
It’s thoroughly entertaining and never felt like a 3 hour movie
It’s clear that the producers understood the underlying themes, and (aside from the fact that I was also hooked, I won’t post it as a spoiler) they did the original a great service and still managed to include some subplots that I thought would be cut. Of course, if you’re a purist who hated The Lord of the Rings because Peter Jackson changed characters and aspects from his 100% faithful adaptation of the book, you won’t like this either.
There’s also a great soundtrack that I found myself stuck with throughout the credits due to its repetition
